Post from a fossil voter to young voters.
When I was barely pubescent, I got involved in supporting the campaign of Eugene McCarthy, and while my envelope stuffing wasn’t enough to win the White House, it was plenty enough to tick off my Dad, even though he was a Democrat. It took me a long time to figure out why he was so irritated. Now I know it had nothing to do with the candidate I chose to “support.” He was angry because I was choosing sides in a fight I knew absolutely nothing about.
Today’s young voters, I think, certainly have the opportunity to be more informed, but let’s face it. They’re not going to get the information they need to make an informed vote from thrill-up-my-leg media or from campus classrooms helmed with an army of Ward Churchills. It takes a little effort. And according to this from Michael Barone, they’d better hurry up with the research.
So if, you’re a young voter, and you seriously understand the responsibility that comes with your vote, please do some of the research Katie Couric and Jon Stewart may have missed — if you haven’t already.
At least, read some of theseeditorials. Even if you disagree, at least they contain facts you deserve to know, and the writing is nice and tight. At a minimum, they will give you the context and perspective that are impossible to have at your age, and you will be smarter for it.
