New tune: Peta Girl

This might be the first song to use the shamelessly fabricated word “nekkedidity.” It’s called Peta Girl, (UPDATE — I’ve taken the song down until I can remix it without the painful limiting.)and so far the most common question from friends who’ve heard it is “What inspired this?”

In case you have the same reaction, I traced it back to hearing the phrase “We just want to raise awareness” too many times. I hit an awareness threshhold because, well, I think my awareness is finite. If I want to be aware of new stuff, I have to ditch some of the stuff occupying my current awareness, and this calls for cerebral rezoning, a process that’s often unfair to my current awareness occupants.

So I was thinking about awareness, advocacy and protests, and that led to Peta. I should mention that another inspiration for this is Jonathan Coulton, who did a song a week for a year. I haven’t listened to them all, but every one I heard I thought was excellent. If you’re in Atlanta, he’s coming to do a show in a few weeks.

For you audio nerds out there, this track was built with excellent loops from Betamonkey using a macbook with Digital Performer and a Focusrite Saffire interface.

I think this tune could make an interesting video, and if it ever does, I want to be at the shoot. Go ahead and snag the track if you want to use it for something in accordance with the Creative Commons license I’ve set. I think the terms are: use it to your heart’s content unless it’s making you money, in which case I should get some. That’s because I find money useful essential. I’ll probably move this one to the store if I keep liking it. I need to see if I can do that pay-what-you-think it’s-worth thing there. If you listened — thanks.

Oh, a note to the friends who heard the earlier version. This one is less painful.

UPDATE: Also, friends said I needed to bump up the vocals, and though this seemed cruel to listeners, I did it anyway. Also, I slapped together a vid with hopes that someone could slap together a better one. The youtube conversion makes the music sound like it’s being played through a wet sponge.

UPDATE: I’m going to try to clean this one up with a resing of the chorus at least and better mixing. However, since I won’t sing with other members of the Family Unit in the house, completion date for this isn’t firm.
