Any audio gearheads have a clue about my malfunction?

I’ve mentioned in the past how much I like the Focusrite Saffire interface, but now it’s not happy in my little studio setup, and if anyone has a clue as to why, I’m all ears.

There are two problems. First, the XLR inputs on the front don’t give me any levels worth a hoot, though the TRS inputs work fine. Secondly, I get this weird sound.

Both problems happen happen in Garageband as well as Digital Performer.

I suspect it’s probably not coincidence that this happened after I ran last month’s OS updates, though it could be a hardware prob with the saffire? Pres maybe?

If anyone has had similar adventures,I’m all ears, especially if you found a way out.

Here’s the setup:

macbook pro

Os 10.4.11

External firewire drive (seagate free agent pro)
Spidf in/out to yamaha 01V digital mixer
Digital Performer
Sample rate 44100, buffer 1024

Saffire control 2.3b1
Firmware 2.2
Dsp firmware 1.1

UPDATE: I think I can rule out any problem with the Saffire hardware. I plugged it into my XP machine and saw good levels in the Saffire Control software. That’s right, Macbook Pro — I’m lookin’ at you.

UPDATED UPDATE: Then I bring the Saffire back into the “studio” and connect it via firewire to the mac, this time with the Saffire first and the firewire external drive second, restart the mac three or four times, and now I’m getting good levels here, too. If that weird sound stays away, it might be fixed. Of course, I have no idea how or why. That was fun, wasn’t it?
